Although Milo Baughman was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1923, he grew up predominantly in Long Beach, a quintessentially easygoing California coastal town – a background that many have been credited with Baughman’s inherently unpretentious and accessible design practice later. He incorporated his eponymous company in 1947, and quickly began acquiring numerous commissions; the first major commissions were from Glenn of California and Pacific Iron, two brands deeply involved in the California Modern movement. Baughman met fellow furniture designer Thayer Coggin in 1953, and the two endeavored on a fruitful partnership that lasted for decades. The duo crafted an oeuvre of archetypal mid-century modern furnishings that harmonized form and function, and used the movement’s most popular material choices such as leather, raw wood, and metal. Many of Baughman’s original designs continue to be emulated or copied today – a testament to the timelessness of the pieces he produced.
